Level 2 NVQ In Plant Operations
The NVQ is workplace-assessed on a live operating site. You need to be currently working on site and operating the machine. An assessor watches you work and builds a portfolio of evidence of your competence.
There is a small sign-off component at the office to complete your portfolio, but this isn't classroom-based training.
The NVQ qualification itself never expires. Only the card needs renewing. This is the route to the Blue NPORS/CSCS Competent Operator card.
Which Blue Card Do You Need?
The plant operator card and the trade card are separate, with different requirements. Depending on your job and the sites you work on, you may need both.
Upgrade Your NPORS Red Card To A Competent Operator Card
For plant operators. The Competent Operator card shows the plant categories you have been assessed as competent to operate.
- Hold the Red NPORS/CSCS Trained Operator card for your plant category, gained through NPORS training or an Experienced Operator Test.
- Complete the relevant Level 2 NVQ in Plant Operations for the categories you operate.
- Meet the health and safety requirements for the NPORS/CSCS card scheme.
- Upgrade to the Blue NPORS/CSCS Competent Operator card, showing your plant categories.
Get Your CSCS Skilled Worker Card
For trades and occupations. The Skilled Worker card proves you hold the construction qualification for the work you do on site, such as Construction Operations or Groundworks.
- Complete the relevant occupational Level 2 NVQ for your role, for example Construction Operations (Groundworks).
- Pass the appropriate CITB Health, Safety and Environment test.
- Apply for the CSCS Skilled Worker card.

The Plant Operations NVQ is the route to the Blue NPORS/CSCS Competent Operator card. The Construction Operations (Groundworks) NVQ is an occupational qualification for the CSCS Skilled Worker card.
